our story
claire leona and maeve met at LFS, vying for positions by day and bonding in the two brewers by night, both with a single ambition : to make films. and not just any films but ones that are artisticaly told, beautifully shot and with enticing narratives that are hard to forget.
in april 2007, after realising the benefits of ‘ltd’ to assist with locking down interviews within the UN (long story) they formed dog eared films, recruiting alexandra and kick-starting the whole adventure with a music video for a friend. He gave them a handful of five pound notes and a brilliant song. they hired an abandoned studio under a railway bridge from some models shooting a topless western and arrived with wallpaper and paint. utilising their artistic backgrounds they learnt valuable lessons: that corners can be made of cardboard, locations could be ‘bought’ with biscuits, charm is currency, actors having a seemingly endless fondness for claire, anything can be lit to cheat by a cinematographer that quickly gained the prefix “the”, and- when in doubt- (alexandra yells..) paint it black.
since then we’ve come a long way: shooting documentaries in asia, corporates in suits and art commissions on super 8. alexandra skipped into production with all the force her six foot stature enabled, ‘the maeve’ built a mighty show reel with connections dotting the globe and claire keeps writing these award winning scripts. we have been commissioned by arts council england, the commonwealth vision awards and some very talented musicians, to name a few.
the set up has changed- the studio is now our own (which fortunately allows a much greater scale of production, but unfortunately means less topless models), corners come easy, and we do now pay locations- but the mantra’s the same: take a good script and then beg, borrow and steal what’s needed. when it comes to storytelling- use your heart and imagination because nothing is impossible for the ladies of dog eared films! |
